1. Sort Before They Arrive
Junk removal crews charge by truck volume. If they spend time sorting through mixed piles on-site, you're paying for their labor during that sorting. Do the sorting yourself beforehand:
- Donate pile: Furniture and items in good condition. Goodwill, Habitat ReStores, and local Facebook groups will take furniture, working appliances, and clothing. Many junk removal companies will drop donations at the right facility — ask.
- Recycle pile: Cardboard, paper, scrap metal. Many companies divert these from landfill, but separating them speeds things up.
- Junk pile: Everything else that's genuinely trash.
2. Separate Hazardous Materials
Set aside anything the crew cannot take: paint cans, chemicals, propane tanks, motor oil. Have these in a clearly separate area with a note. If you're not sure whether an item qualifies as hazardous, take a photo and send it to the company before the appointment — better to know in advance than on the day.
3. Clear Access Paths
The crew will need a clear path from your items to their truck. If you're in an apartment, prop elevator doors if possible. For garages, move vehicles out. For basement items, clear the stairway. Every minute the crew spends navigating obstacles is a minute you're paying for in labor time.
4. Know What You're Keeping
Put a piece of tape or sticky note on anything you're keeping that's near the items being removed. Crews work fast — it's easy for an item to accidentally leave with the junk if it's mixed in. This is especially important in garage, basement, and attic cleanouts.
5. Be There (or Have Someone There)
Don't leave the property during removal. You'll need to direct the crew, confirm what goes, and sign off on the job when done. Some companies allow unsupervised removal with explicit written permission, but it's much safer and more efficient to be present.
6. Have Payment Ready
Most reputable companies collect payment at the end of the job after showing you the loaded truck. Have your preferred payment method ready. Confirm upfront whether they accept credit cards (most do), checks, or cash.
7. Do a Walkthrough When Done
Before the truck leaves, do a quick walkthrough of all cleared areas. Check for any items left behind, any damage to walls or floors from moving heavy items, and confirm that all agreed-upon items are gone. Good companies expect this and will welcome the chance to address any issues before they leave the property.
